Safety First.
This post would be to remind everyone, wherever they are going, and whatever they are doing over this long Memorial Day weekend to keep safety in mind. By all means enjoy the beautiful weather, enjoy your family, enjoy yourselves, enjoy your outdoor activities, enjoy and be safe. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get to your destinations and slow down! Take the extra few minutes and slather everyone with sunscreen, slap on helmets, and life jackets. Keep in mind that it so much better to bring everyone home safely than just about anything else. I mean it, your kid's and your spouse coming home safe with you after all the fun is done, should be priority # 1.
I wish everyone the most fun possible and wish everyone peace of mind and safety over this weekend. I'm sticking close to home, mostly because I'm a kid-hauler down for a while and the rental company's idea of a suitable loaner is a gas-guzzling pig (not cool!). So I want everyone to have fun, enjoy and to be safe for me and I'll expect everyone to be safely reading my blog next week! ;0) Just a thought...

Want Stress With That?

Well, I have had quite the rough day today. It started out quietly enough as I rolled out of bed about 7:15 or so and wiped the sleep out of my eyes...little did I know that something sinister was coming my direction. I shuttled kids into the car just after 8:25, to drop of my oldest for his Safety Patrol duty. I dropped him off and waved goodbye and parked my van with my younger two children in it to wait for about 15 minutes until it was closer to school starting. I've found that if I let my little one out any earlier he tends to get into mischief...it's just much easier to sit for few minutes beforehand.
I pulled up in front of the school and parked and pulled down the TV for the kids to watch a DVD and settled back into my seat with my now lukewarm cup of coffee. The kids argued back and forth about whether or not to skip a scene and had just settled on skipping it when I could hear the screech of a tire behind me. My car rocked as I looked in the side-view mirror, only to have it be obliterated before my eyes. I let out a scream in slow motion before being echoed by the screams of my children in the backseat. It took a few seconds to realize what had happened before I had the sense to look around behind me and make sure no one was actually damaged. I was greeted by the side of my car by several concerned parents and teachers as I pried my sliding door on the driver's side open, having had the "automatic" mechanism disabled by the impact. I unbuckled my baby and pulled him into my arms as he was crying and walked around to the other side to open the door for my daughter. I assured several people that we were really okay, just scared, as I pulled my daughter out of the car. I got them calmed down a little and realized I needed my cell phone to call my man. Somehow a teacher guided the kids into the office as I searched my car unsuccessfully for my phone. Why is it that we always forget our phones when it's really important? I walked into the office to call and was greeted by my daughter afterward who was very shaken up still. A teacher assured me that my baby was alright and that he had taken him to class and my daughter walked out to the car to wait with me. I asked her if she needed to go home, but she ended going to school when the bell rang.
As we waited for an officer to show up I noticed that the Safety Patrol crossing guard who was on duty behind me was a friend of my kids' and he was crying and very upset. I also noticed his Mom was standing on the sidewalk behind me. It wasn't until I heard the driver of the van, that had hit me, tell a bystander that she had been hit by a white car, that I pieced together what had happened.
The white car (driven by my kids' friend's Mom) had pulled out of the driveway behind me and had clipped a blue van, popping it's tire. The driver of the blue van lost control because of the popped tire and went crashing into my van. I unfortunately, was just at the back end of a chain of events and my van got the brunt of it!
My man got there and we examined the van closer and discovered that not only had the van been sideswiped, my axle on the front had been broken, the back axle bent, transmission damaged, and the force of the crash was enough that the rim on the opposite side of the car had been driven into the curb. It broke the cement even!
After taking a zillion pictures and filling out an incident report and talking to the officer and the insurance adjuster and the tow truck drivers and the driver of the blue van, I watched as they loaded my broken van onto a tow truck and hauled it away.
I have never been in an automobile accident before and hope to never be in any worse of one again. So much for a quiet enough day! I think I'll turn in for the day and no, I really didn't need stress with that! ;0)

Keep a list.
I think this is more for me than my loyal blog readers...just a FYI! In the need for a little more organization in your life? Unless you are a hardcore type A personality, my guess would be yes.=0) Seeing as though I am definitely not type A by any means, I know I do. One great and simple way to organize your life, thoughts, mess, and meetings would be through the list.
Take a minute to write down (or type, my handwriting sucks) the things that need to be accomplished for the day. Clean the bathroom, take Susie to the dentist, complete a project. This way you can visually see what you intend to accomplish that day and edit it if necessary.
Take advantage of your scheduler. My phone has such an awesome easy gadget, the scheduler. I make an appointment and as I am on the phone with them I open my scheduler and plug in the time and date. I set it to remind before the appointment and voila! I'll remember to go!
Keep a running grocery list. I need to get myself one again, but the magnetic dry erase board for on the front of the fridge is great for this! This way when you are out of something you (or the fam damily) can write it on the list! Wow, no more running to the store again, after you were just there and forget to get eggs...hmmm...
Start a blog. It can be public for everyone to see your thoughts or private so you can use it as a journal. Write in it at least a couple days a week and use it to log all those great ideas you had...and then forgot what they were...what were we talking about again? I've got that one down, I singlehandedly write three of them! (I know, I know...)
So I know I'm going to try to much better on these things and keep my lists. Maybe then I'll have time to write four blogs! Ha! That's your tip for Tuesday, try it! It may very well work for you! ;0)

Wholly Guacamole!
I love avocados. I really do and what's the very best thing you can make out of avocados? Why guacamole of course! Wholly Guacamole is rock on the very best store bought guacamole I've ever had! Made with fresh Hass Avocados and all natural ingredients, you really can't go wrong! Even the packaging is "earth responsible" and we all like living a little more greenly, right? This stuff is just as good as smashing up the avocados yourself and I love to use in seven layer dip and fresh salsa or just serve it up with a bag of Frito's and yum! =0) Did I mention it's gluten-free too? Located in your favorite grocers veggie case, you can easily pick some up and give it a whirl today! You should try it, I KNOW I like it! =0)

Respect. Why is it there seems to be a whole lot less of it these days? And why isn't it being taught to our children? I am huge on this and the serious lack of it. Respect for others, respect for people's property, respect for yourself. Gone it seems are the values taught to us by generation after generation and it's such a simple concept too.
Respect that other people don't think the way you do. What a dull and boring place this life would be if everyone thought exactly the same! No different opinions, no perspective from a different angle, no new, innovative, creative ideas from others.
Respect other people's things. Is it yours? Why are you touching it then? How would you like it if it was yours and someone else just took it or broke it? Exactly. Think that way as you go about your business, teach your kids the same.
Respect yourself. Respect your body, your mind, your way of thinking. Enjoy the fact that there is no one else just like you. When people know that you respect yourself, they will respect you as well.
Lastly, respect your children. They aren't just mini-you's and have different opinions and thoughts and feelings from you and respect their ability to be able to have just that. When my kids need disciplining, I don't talk down to them, or make fun of them, I am fair and honest always. I tell them why they are getting punished, tell the what behavior needs to change, and why. I also tell them afterwords how much I love them. I respect my kids as individuals...and when you show them respect...they respect you. Just a thought...

Busy, busy, busy

What Mom's life isn't these days, huh? I just realized that I never sat down and wrote a post for today...and it's no wonder I didn't find the time! I got up at 7:30ish, had coffee, supervised kids getting ready for school and then took them to school at 8:30. Got home around nine with a migraine, had breakfast, a fist full of vitamins, a Claritan, and an Excedrin before tackling a dirty house. Started a project, didn't finish a project, vacuumed the entire house and loaded the dishwasher. Picked up the family room, the formal living room, myself up off the floor. Got into the shower finally at one to hurry up and get dressed make-up and all to the fetch the kids at school at for an eye appt. at 1:45, in which we arrived at 1:55. Begged and pleaded with all the kids not getting their eyes examined to attempt to behave themselves while waiting their turns. Began threatening as the appt. shuffled over the hour mark. Ended up bribing one child with french fries to pick put a decent pair of frames. Ran errands all kids hanging off the cart at on point and ran to Wendy's for dinner, and fetched bribery fries and frosties? (What?)
We arrived home at 5:00 the man was supposed to be home at 5:30 showed up at 6:30. This after I threatened bodily harm to get clean bedrooms, for Grandma's arrival tomorrow. My man and I ventured out on date night, pushed one day ahead because of Grandma, at 7:15. Had a little too much fun just shopping without the kids...and stopped to talk to a friend for a few minutes before getting home to shuttle kids to bed (an hour late). It's now 10:15 and I am running down the list of what I need to accomplish in the 4 hours between the kids going to school tomorrow and Grandma's arrival. Whew! I'm tired just typing it all! ;0) zzzZZZzzz

Don't be so serious!

Laughter really is the best medicine for what ails you. We all have at least a little drama in our lives and if you let it get you down...what is the point in going on? I get weighed down by the woes of the world myself and have to limit myself from watching the news occasionally because of it. So much bad is happening all around us all the time and the media takes full advantage and bombards us from all levels with news of disasters, wars, death, heart-ache. That being said you can't let it wear you down and make you forget what is "good" in your life.
Having a hard time laughing it up? Pick a extremely silly activity to do with your family. We sing karaoke in our living room, not all that well either! I always make the best of not being the best songstress ever and make sure to dance badly and laugh at myself in the process. Start a water fight in your backyard on a hot day, call an all out tickle war on your kids. I tend to be quite random, which causes my kids to roll around in stitches., Burst out in silly song while driving, our pretend to munch on toes as you tuck your little one's in at night! My baby squeals as I come after his toes, snorting in momster fashion. I love to catch my man off guard and knock him over onto the bed, just to get laid on and tickled. It's so funny though!
Give it a try next time you find yourself in such a serious mood. Talk in a funny accent, laugh at inappropriate times, burst into song...just because. Life's too short to be so serious! =0)

Don't forget to take some "Me" time. (and don't feel guilty about it either!)

You know the old adage, "If Momma ain't happy, nobody's happy!" Have really ever thought about how true that really is? Nobody wants to slave away unappreciated ALL the time! So, set apart a little time in your day to do something for just you! I have a friend (hero, actually) who has 5 kids, 2 not in school yet and has time to work on her passion as well! Click here to see! It makes me want the same in my life. I "reward" myself for accomplishing whatever household chores I got done that day with a little computer time, or painting , or playing music, or taking pictures. Not only does this make me feel better about tackling the never ending dirty laundry piles, but it helps me be me. You know, the happy version...not the Momster (as my kids call me, ha!) version who is grouchy about cleaning the table for umpteenth time today! I actually told my daughter the other day that she was making me grouchy...she answered with a, "what do you mean making you?" as if to say I already was...hmmm...
Now who says Moms don't deserve some "ME" time too? Take some time...the laundry will still be there when you get back! Ha! Here's your tip for Tuesday, it works for me...maybe it'll work for you! =0)

Lysol Disinfecting Spray!

Did you know that this versatile product can be sprayed on almost all hard surfaces, as well as, soft? It sure can! What Mom doesn't appreciate this product? I mean really...if anyone is sick in my house, I immediately wash the offenders bedding, clothing, and spray down all surfaces (including the pillows and mattress) with Lysol! I spray door knobs, I spray counter tops, I spray a fine mist over the computer key board. I spray the insides of shoes, I spray the inside of my garbage cans, I spray the furniture as well! Lysol is also great for preventing mold and mildew as well, who knew? Just clean and wipe dry your shower and spray with Lysol, you will significantly inhibit the mold from coming back. I use it on the outside of shower door in the joints where mold loves to grow and it seems to help, so hey i just keep doing it! Okay, so you'll have to excuse me I have to Lysol a smelly boys room now...but, this is what I like! Try it, I'll bet you'll like it too! =0)

I love you. Three small, but powerful words. They have the power to make someone's day, they have the power to heal. These three small words can begin an entire journey and tuck your little one's in at night. "I love you Momma", as my baby hugs me tight. My load is lightened, my insight refreshed...all the things that weighed me down during the day have suddenly been erased by three such small powerful words. Take the time to tell your spouse this today and mean it! Take the time to tell each one of your kids as you tuck them in tonight. I love you today, I love you tomorrow, I love you into the vast unknown that is our future. I wanted you before I knew, I needed you in my life, I'll love you till we meet again. Wield the power of the most powerful phrase known to the English language...I LOVE YOU. Just a thought. =0)

One of THOSE days...

Do you ever have one of those days? You know what kind I mean...one of those days where you feel no matter hard you try to keep your head above water, you find yourself drowning? I know I have. Sometimes housework and bickering kids and grumpy spouses and just life in general gets pretty overwhelming. I've had a few of those days recently and sometimes the outcome isn't pretty. The other day was one of them and I'm embarrassed to admit, I didn't fair all that well. It was just enough to remain upright that day as it was and piled on top of it a misbehaving child, an uncommunicative/very late working man, a me...who should have been a little more thoughtful and I ended up with a very large tear soaked mess. Unfortunately incidents such as these force everyone to open their eyes a little wider and make a real conscious effort to change their ways.
Last night we ate dinner together as a family, without the TV and without me growling at various bad mannered children (I tried really hard not to!). When we were all done the kids donned pajamas and I set up a place on the counter for them to paint a craft project and we spent time together...media free. The adults talked to the kids, the kids painted and got along and after the kids went to bed, the adults kept the TV off.
Small things are just that, small. Imagine if you pile up and entire room full of small things and suddenly the small things become huge and overwhelming. If you are having one of those days...stop. Take a minute to take a deep breath and think about why all those small things are getting the better of you. I'm a firm believer of if things aren't going your way, look at yourself first and make a small change. Watch the tone of your voice, ask please always and be sincere, don't expect things to get done by wishing it so. If you need help, be direct and ask for help...no one is born with mind reading ability (especially men!), if you are so very overwhelmed seek help. Don't fall victim to one of those days.

Take Your Vitamins!

I am a huge fan of the daily supplement. I attribute this to my man and watch as he gets sick a lot less, has more energy and keeps chronic ailments at bay, such as migraines. It really works as far as I'm concerned...and definitely find myself sick less, having more stamina, etc. Doing a little research on the effectiveness of certain supplements really goes along way a decent resource would be here. Here's what I take on a daily basis:
A multi-vitamin. The one I take is formulated for specifically for women and contains all the necessary daily nutrients plus calcium, iron, and zinc.

Acidophilus. The same "friendly" bacteria that is found in the intestinal tract and helps promote healthy intestinal function. Basically the same stuff as in yogurt without all the fat and calories and without having to eat gallons of it! I use it to keep me regular and it is also effective for keeping yeast infections at bay.

600 mg Calcium with Vitamin D. Calcium is a must for a woman's bone health and especially when osteoporosis runs on both sides of your family (as it does in mine) this supplement is a no-brainer! 600 mg is the recommended daily dosage and make sure it contains Vitamin D, as this helps with absorption.

Super strength Cranberry. This is a must for urinary tract health, especially when you are prone to urinary tract infections...as I am! As long as I take this on a daily basis and drink plenty of water, I have no worries...well about bladder infections, (which suck BTW!)anyway! =0)

Fish Oil. For years I suffered from migraines, they came on from stress and run hand in hand with hypoglycemia (unfortunately) and I would still get one about every other week, unless I make sure to take my 1200 mg of fish oil daily. I was actually taking 1000 mg, but noticed I was still getting migraines occasionally. I upped the dosage to 1200 mg and that seems to have done the trick! If you are concerned with any fishy after taste take the enteric coated kind and take with milk or yogurt.

L-lysine. L-lysine is a must if you get canker sores, cold sores, or any kind of mouth sores. I no longer get canker sores when I'm stressed and my oldest boy, who suffers from chronic cold sores, takes it when he's getting one and it clears right up! I'm actually amazed at how quickly it clears up too!
As you can see I really love the benefits of taking my vitamins and in such a busy world where it's easy to get run down, I believe they are a must. I mean I hate being sick or run down and it makes me ornery when I can't get things accomplished like I want! So here's your tip for Tuesday...give it a try, who knows? It may just work for ya! =0)

Trader Joe's!
This great grocery store paradise is full of many "hard-to-finds", healthy choices as well as a wide variety of vegan/gluten-free options! I get excited just thinking of all the great things we can get there! Of course the pic shows Veggie and Flax seed chips which are really yummy (if I do say do myself!) and there are great bags of dried fruit, gluten-free pastas and breads, fresh veggies, you name it! If you are looking for a great place to feed your family healthy, this is it! My one compliant would be the lack of stores in my state, luckily I live pretty close to Vegas and definitely make sure to stop at Trader Joe's on my way home! So if you're listening Trader Joe's...build one in my city...you would do great! I know many people wanting a great place to shop for healthy eating! This is what I like...try it! I'll bet you'll like it too! =0)

"Judge not, that ye be not judged", Matthew 7:1.

I know what you're thinking...why is she quoting from the good book? Hey nothing wrong with being well-read I say and the good book is packed with a plethora of great advice, so it is what is.=0) The point, oh yes I do have one of those...it would be not to be so quick to judge others. You know as in situations, appearances, what not. You never know what is really going on behind people's actions unless that person is you. I try so hard not to be judgmental of people, I know what it feels like to be singled out for not being like everyone else. I spent a good part of my childhood not knowing that it really is okay to be different and try to encourage my kids to stand out and shine bright as well. Being a little more open minded might very well be the key to saving the human race from eternal damnation...maybe not! That's it. Just a thought!=0)

wHaT's FoR dInNeR?

How many of you heard this today? "Mom, what's for dinner?" Some days it's just enough to try not to tear your hair out! Okay, well maybe not that bad...but, doesn't it seem like you eat the same things over and over again? I know it most likely true at my house...the kids only willingly eat certain things, my man has Celiac's along with a few different food allergies...I'm never hungry. So what do you do? I asked my FB friends for a little help with the what's for dinner question and here's what I got:
Jessica Johnson Lamb: I know it's a tad early...but, what's for dinner? (I need some help for blog purposes BTW!)

Janae Yorgason:
Nachos - Chips, refried beans, cheese and sour cream. Doesn't get much better than that!

Jessica Johnson Lamb:
my kind of dinner! yum!=0)

Mary Harshaw Rindlesbach:
a variation on the campbell's three cheese pasta skillet (you can look it up on their site) - I add cooked chicken and broccoli for a one-pan dinner. my husband LOVES this.

Jessica Johnson Lamb:
sounds delicious! thanks Mary! =0)

Jamie Willden Schoppmann:
frozen shrimp sauted with some garlic and then rice and probably corn or some other side, kids love it!

Jessica Johnson Lamb:
if I could get the kids to eat shrimp that would be great...my man would LOVE it though! ;0)

Dorey Pierce Ponce:
MMM! I made Navajo Tacos on Sunday and I am craving some today! :D So easy...Let Rhodes Rolls rise for 3-4 hours and then throw them in a fry daddy! Yum! :D

Jessica Johnson Lamb:
Awww...I totally miss me some Navajo tacos...yum!;0)

Lura Dulaney Glover:
Salad w/ chicken on top...too hot to eat hot food!

Jessica Johnson Lamb:
yeah, we go for the non-cook type meals frequently in the heat! =0)

Bernita Mckinney:
So what's for dinner? Desiree and I will be on the next flight ha ha!!

Jessica Johnson Lamb:
nah, I wouldn't worry about it B...we went for the Wendy's all the way! Go Mom of the year! ;0)

Bernita Mckinney:
Woo hoo! LOL McDonald's is right around the corner. Desiree says that I am her "best mom!" LOL

Jessica Johnson Lamb:
I love it! LOL! =0)

Bernita Mckinney:
We're suckers for their pies, ice cream and sweet tea!

Sometimes life gets in the way of actually making dinner...like it did tonight, I had a child who had a concert this evening and it was much easier to stop on the way home than it was to try to make something afterwords! I have a few ideas for always kid friendly ideas that even my picky brood will eat and I'll put them over on the quick recipe guide to the right of the page for you to try! Chin up we all have to have dinner at some point and don't feel bad if that includes a drive-thru window occasionally! =0)

What's is a Mom?

Well duh, if you have a pulse I'm sure you know what a Mom is! I mean no one would be alive on this planet today, if they didn't exist...I'm serious! Think about it, unless you were hatched...you have a Mom someplace. Look up Mom in Wikipedia and it looks like this :
Mom (disambiguation)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mom may refer to:

Mothering

* Mom (or mommy), is a term used predominantly in North American English speaking countries in reference to a mother, the female parent
* Soccer mom, demographic group of women with school-age children, a term used in North America

(I like the soccer Mom added in there too!) But, kidding aside does your Mom really have to be YOUR mom? The short answer is no. A Mom could be really your aunt, or a grandmother who raised you...a Mom could be the person who took care of you as a child. I have a friend who was raised by her Grandparents and in her mind her Mom is her Grandma. She raised her, cared about her well-being, was and still is there for her when she needs her. My man lost his Mom a few years ago and has an Aunt who took over for her, sending birthday cards and presents at Christmas...he sends her a Mother's Day card every year.
Here's a reminder from a "not so average Mom", make sure you thank your Mom this Mother's Day. Send a card, flowers, give her a call and tell her how much she means to you...it doesn't have to be much and it doesn't have to cost a thing. I'm looking forward to semi-behaved kids and three tight hugs and I love you's...because honestly, the smiling faces of my children is thanks enough.=0)

I'm not going to lie to you. I am not a great and glorious spotless clean house of a Mom! Too many years of working full time and cleaning in the half hour I had not taken up by running various children to where they need to be, running to work, etc...all of which has taken a toll on my clutter free skills. This being said, I have found myself with a little more time on my hands as of late...and have had to reevaluate my way of doing things. This is what I've found that seems to work:

1. If you walk by it and it doesn't belong there, pick it up. How many times do you walk past the sneakers left by the front door before you actually pick them up? Exactly. When you walk past grab them, deposit them where they need to go...grab what ever else is out of place along the way. I actually have found if I walk the public spaces of the house with a laundry basket, I can easily pick up what doesn't belong and start at one end of the house and work to the other putting the errant items away.
2. Start the kids out helping early. My kids all learned to clean up after themselves as toddlers. We sang the clean up song and made it into a game and now that they are older, I give them a small allowance each week to clean up after themselves. My kids are 11, 9, and 7 and I use them to help. Not only are teaching your kids life sills that they can use into adult-hood, you're helping yourself out by not spending all day cleaning! My kids, empty the dishwasher, rinse off their dishes after any meal and load the dishwasher, clean their bathroom by wiping all surfaces and the toilet, they clean their rooms and help put away laundry as well. The kids also empty trashes throughout the house and make their own beds. This helps me out tons!=0)
3. Pick a room a day to deep clean. I pick a bathroom to scrub or deep clean the kitchen, or reorganize a closet. Don't get me wrong, I wipe down everything when it's dirty, but occasionally things need a good scrubbing!=0)
4. Do at least 1 load of laundry everyday. This includes, folding and putting it away! I feel like I do laundry more than just about anything else...with five people in the house and the kids not getting any cleaner, I imagine this will be the case for quite some time to come! As long as I do at least one load from start to finish daily, it is definitely manageable!
5. Chill. I know so many Mom's out there that stress out about the cleanliness of their abodes...let me share a secret...don't. This is how I think about it: My kids are happy, everyone got fed, everyone has SOMETHING clean to wear, nothing smells horrible, and I deep cleaned something today. So, I'm good...and if your in-laws have something to say about your house, invite them to clean!
Here's your tip for Tuesday...it works for me, maybe it will for you too! =0)
